ABOUT
Overpressure Club, proudly Canadian at its core, presents a unique opportunity to reinvent and merge concepts. This innovative concept, set in the newly designed space at the corner of Crawford and Bloor Streets in Toronto, offers a distinct experience that will be a game-changer in the industry. When Alfred Siu, a respected member of the Toronto cocktail community, took over the space and asked us to collaborate on developing the strategy and design for a new concept, we leapt at the opportunity.
Our strategic explorations revealed a niche not yet fully explored in the Canadian cocktail scene—innovative draft cocktails and small Japanese-inspired plates. This meticulous research, which determined the demographic focus and competition benchmarking, formed the foundation of our project, instilling confidence in its potential for success. We aimed to reflect on the rich cultural mosaic of Toronto and Canada, along with the location's unique history and cultural heritage of the neighbourhood. Alfred's unwavering devotion to customer experience and maintaining an extremely high standard of service drove our conversations. Every customer (and employee) touchpoint was meticulously developed to create a world-class experience. From the visual identity to the interior design to the menu design, the web and social media presence were developed simultaneously to ensure a cohesive and high-quality experience. The design was positioned toward a sophisticated clientele with an efficient, professional, and fun culture built into the space, providing a memorable experience for every visitor. The Overpressure Club brand identity we developed is showcased throughout the interior. Nuances of jewel tones of red, orange, and green shades, robust and playful menu typography, and hand-drawn illustrations of the cocktails are some examples. The artwork in the space was conceived to create an OPC mascot—"The Samurai Cat,"— and other artworks referencing the classic Ghost in the Shell manga were custom-created by Yana from our team, specifically for the space. To create a unique design experience, we created multiple focal points in the small space. The first most prominent element is the "main stage" of the space, the bar. As a concept focused on draft cocktails, this element needed to be outstanding. The back of the bar is purposefully designed to be the centrepiece of the room, with 12 beautiful taps mounted to a polished monolithic black, green, and gold granite. We took inspiration from the wooden grid in traditional Japanese architecture for the bar face, showcased in a wooden slat grid. A warm glow above the bar emanates from a perforated metal enclosure, showcasing an array of beautiful sake and spirit bottles, referencing how bottles are on display in many Izakayas. When strategy, brand, interior design, and operations are all developed by a collaborative team, the result is evident. Overpressure Club is in its infancy but will be a hotbed for creativity and customer enjoyment for years, a testament to our team's collective effort and expertise.
